MAYBE I’M NOT REALLY DOING GREAT…
Have you, like me, ever looked around and wondered, “What the heck am I even doing with myself?”
Like, maybe you spent a few too many hours catching up on Mrs. America last week and skimped on the sleep.
(Hey, it was quiet at midnight. Nobody needed a snack. The show is awesome. It was glorious. No regrets!)
Or maybe it seems like everyone else is nailing this crisis school thing and you are rocking more of an un-school type situation?
Or you see all kinds of people out running or riding bikes and you hardly have the energy to open the fridge for the next snack?
Well, I’m here to tell you, because you need to hear it, I’m thinking that you’re doing great and your future is pretty dang bright.
Lordy it’s hard
Being a grown woman right now is super strange.
We are somehow supposed to do all the things. This is not a new observation. We all know it. We talk about it. We lament it. And then we carry on trying to do all the things.
It’s bananas.
So I wanted to offer you a powerful 3 question test to prove that you are, in fact, doing great.
1: are you breathing?
Like, at all?
If you there was a point today, where you transitioned from asleep to awake and took a breath, that was an excellent start.
I’d say that you were officially crushing this day right then. I hope you offered yourself some water, possibly warmed and run through some magical beans if that’s your style, and took your entire breathing- life-energy into phase two of the day: maintenance.
If you continued a pattern of breathing in and then also out for the entire day so far, then congratulations! You are, in fact, doing great. Spring 2020 looks good on you, Momma.
2: Are you showing up?
You might be thinking, “Well that depends. What the heck does that even mean right now?”
I did a zoom yoga class this morning and my instructor kept saying things like, “Show up for yourself right now. Show up bigger than you thought you could.”
I know I was supposed to be in the zone and not thinking, but this wasn’t a real studio. I was in my basement, I heard the vacuum upstairs, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I needed to vacuum the spot where I was standing.
Anyay, not being in the zone meant I got to think about this strange thing that we all say to each other now.
“Show up.”
It definitely means something different right now, right? We can’t physically show up anywhere!
So here is what I think: have you given your focus to anyone or anything, including yourself, at all today? I mean, have you slowed your scroll for a period of time to look someone in the eyes and listen to their words?
Have you laced up your shoes and gone for a run and allowed yourself to experience all of the sensations from the breeze, the sun, the sound of passing cars, the smell of a spring flower, or the chill of falling raindrops?
Did you send a text to a friend with a funny meme just so she knows you were thinking about her?
Have you even just taken two minutes to have a quiet sit and think your thoughts?
Then there it is! You are showing up. You’re doing great.
3. Do you have the ability to hope?
Do you say things like, “When all of this is over, I am going immediately to…”
Or, “Just so you know, I am going to hug everyone when this is all over…”
I’d say that anyone who registered for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend earlier this week still has the ability to hope.
I certainly hope I see you there, by the way.
If you haven’t let up training for your fall races knowing that they are up in the air, then you have hope.
I think if you have hope for the future, you’re doing great.
See? You’re doing great!
So there it is.
My dear athletes, no matter what you are telling yourselves lately, no matter what silly societal rubric we are piercing together for how to nail this life in the spring of 2020, I just need you to know:
You’re doing great.
Train on
Now get out there this weekend and train like it’s the ultimate act of thriving right now, because it is. When you are training, you are breathing, showing up, and hoping for the future.
Please share this episode with the women in your life that need to be reminded just how much they are doing great. We can all use that boost from time to time, eh?
Enjoy your long runs. I’ll be back in your ears on Monday. Thanks for joining me.
Until next time, Carry on women of valor!
